| WEST POINT AND THE REVOLUTION |
The Hudson River and West Point played a key role during America’s War of Independence. You can combine your tour of West Point with one of several nearby Revolutionary War sites to explore this history.
Located minutes from West Point, Fort Montgomery was the site a significant battle in 1777 for control of the Hudson River. Start at the Visitors Center with its model of the fortifications and narrative of the battle along with displays of Revolutionary War artifacts excavated in the area. Then go out on a docent led tour of the uncovered remains of the fort.

Also known as Knox Headquarters this Federal Mansion is located in Newburgh, about 20 minutes from West Point. This house served as George Washington’s headquarters during his frequent stays in the area. | New Windsor Cantonment & Purple Heart Hall of Fame |
Due to the importance of the Hudson River a large contingent of the Continental Army was stationed here in and around West Point. The New Windsor Cantonment was one of the areas where the troops were quartered. In addition there is the Purple Heart Hall of Fame. The Purple Heart was first awarded during the Revolutionary War here at Newburgh. The Purple Heart Hall of Fame commemorates the history of this award and is creating a database of all Purple Heart recipients.

Boscobel,
a museum of the Federal era, located across the river
from West Point, is a Federal mansion built in 1808.
It houses an outstanding collection of Federal furniture
and household items from the States Dyckman family,
builders of Boscobel. Boscobel also boasts beautiful
grounds, formal gardens and an outstanding panoramic
view of the Hudson River Valley.
